2005 BELMONT STAKES: THE FINAL FACE-OFF

The 2005 Belmont Stakes is just two days away. On the 11th day of June, 2005, the final leg of this year's three-race horse war will see eleven horse contenders fly out of the gates and engage in a battle to decide who will come out on top for the conclusion of this year's race for the Triple Crown.

The race for the Triple Crown title began at the 2005 Kentucky Derby when underdog, Giacomo, bagged the top spot at Churchill Downs. As quickly as it started, so was it's end as Afleet Alex ended Giacomo's quest for the said title with his win in Pimlico at the recently held 2005 Preakness Stakes.

As a result, the Triple Crown, horse racing's Holy Grail, will still remain in limbo this year.

However, that will not stop two horse contenders who will come in for the 2005 Belmont Stakes to settle old scores. The 2005 Kentucky Derby Diamond, Giacomo and 2005 Preakness Stakes Pearl, Afleet Alex, will meet again, this time for the throne in New York City.

In 131 years of three-race horse wars, the match-up between a Derby Diamond and a Preakness Pearl in the last leg of the race for the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, is very rare. In fact, Saturday's rubber match between Giacomo and Afleet Alex will be the 21st time two champions will meet at the last leg.

That's 21 in 131 years of Triple Crown races.

The match-up between Giacomo and Afleet Alex surely is one head-to-head battle to watch. However, one would be a fool if he disregards other contenders at the Belmont Stakes. In any given day of horse racing, anything can happen.

Yes, anything, but that won't stop me from giving you what most people think how this third horse battle will transpire.

Many have already speculated how Afleet Alex will lose this one. However, Afleet Alex's awesome resurrection, somewhat, after being exasperated by Scrappy T at the Preakness Stakes surely made all these speculations nothing more but mere speculations.

When Afleet Alex regained his composure and started his kick for the finish line, the remaining contenders looked as if they were in a stand-still position. Afleet was so dominant that he became the favorite again to win the coming horse war, this time in the 2005 Belmont Stakes.

The final battle in this three-race horse war is just around the corner. Will Giacomo have his revenge on Afleet Alex? Will Afleet Alex make it twin-victories in the last two races? Or will another underdog rise from obscurity and bag the throne in New York City. The 2005 Belmont Stakes is ready, are you?

2005 BELMONT STAKES: THE NEW CONTENDERS

The 2005 Belmont Stakes is just three days away. On the 11th day of June, 2005, eleven horse contenders will fly out of the gates and engage in a battle to decide who will come out on top for the conclusion of this year's race for the Triple Crown title. With the said title gone this year from Giacomo's demise at the Preakness Stakes, these horse contenders will just fight for pride and redemption. And where else to do that but in New York City.

However, in this leg of the race, the field will be different. In fact, it will be eight horses different. Three horse contenders remain from the last two battles to fight for redemption. The said three contenders are none other than 2005 Kentucky Derby Winner Giacomo, 2005 Preakness Stakes Winner Afleet Alex and fallen Kentucky Derby contender who will be out for revenge, Andromeda's Hero.

The remaining eight contenders will be newcomers, setting the stage for a brand new playing field.

First, we have A.P. Arrow, a contender who was supposed to challenge for the recently held Preakness Stakes but was replaced by stable mate, Going Wild. A.P. Arrow is a maiden running in a Grade 1 race. However, don't let that fool you as this contender is not only a son of Belmont Stakes Winner A.P. Indy but also a half-brother to Geri, a multiple graded stakes winner.

Then there's Southern Africa, a One Star Derby winner. Southern Africa will be one of the more lightly raced horses in the Belmont Stakes with just four races under his belt.

A contender named Watchmon will not live up to his namesake, being a mere spectator to the 2005 Belmont Stakes because he will certainly take part in it. Watchmon became a potential Belmont Stakes starter after breezing three furlongs over Belmont's inner turf course in :37. Watchmon is certainly a contender not to be taken lightly.

There's Pinpoint, a contender that will hope to pinpoint victory on June 11. Pinpoint is a Sir Barton Winner who has only lost once in his four-race career. Nick Zito said Pinpoint did not race last year because they had to fire his shins and take their time, the normal two-year old stuff.

Reverberate is also another newcomer at the coming 2005 Belmont Stakes. Reverberate was running in allowance races this year until last out when he was a runner-up in the Peter Pan Stakes, losing to Oratory. Redemption is the theme at this year's Belmont Stakes and Reverberate just might have just that.

A colt named Chekhov will also be starting at the 2005 Belmont Stakes. Chekhov was the 3-2 Peter pan favorite owned by Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith. Chekhov was a $3.3 million colt but has yet to live up to that price.

Nolan's Cat is one of those horses looking to settle old scores with his rivals. He lost to A.P. Arrow, a contender who will also be starting for the 2005 Belmont Stakes. Nolan's Cat is also a runner-up finish to Coin Silver and a third-place effort behind Noble Causeway.

Last but not the least, there's one remaining colt who will complete this year's newcomers for the 2005 Belmont Stakes. This colt will certainly be the storm that will sweep all other horse contenders from their heels. He also happens to be my pick for this leg of the race.

Indy Storm.

Indy Storm is another horse trained by the legendary Nick Zito. Indy is owned by Tracy Farmer from the state of Kentucky and hold a solid three-year old win in Pimlico.

In Indy Storm, Nick Zito could find himself a good and solid contender no one has heard of, at least from the past two horse wars in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes.

Indy Storm is certainly ready for the challenge ahead. For the rest of the horse contenders that will come to New York City for the 2005 Belmont Stakes, they might as well take cover because a storm is coming.

A preliminary look at the contenders in the Belmont Stakes.

From what I can see from the entries in this year’s Belmont Stakes, there doesn’t seem to be very much respect for either the Derby or Preakness winners.

For example:

Why would Lukas enter AP Arrow a horse that just broke its maiden? Does he know something about the weather for Saturday that we don’t? Maybe it’ll run as good as Chekhov did in the Peter Pan after it broke its maiden in a prior race! Then there’s Nolan’s Cat. Yep, still a maiden, but what the hell he only finished 1/2 a length behind AP Arrow. So I guess its trainer is thinking along the same lines as Lukas. Of these (3) I think only Chekhov has an opportunity to improve off its last race.

Then there’s the Zito trio. I’m throwing all of them out. Andromedea’s Hero hasn’t shown a thing either on the racetrack or in the morning trials. No improvement expected. Indy’s Storm has terrific breeding and a similar running style to Afleet Alex, but is nowhere near as fast. Finally there’s Pinpoint who has really improved with the addition of blinkers in its last (3) races. Winning each one by getting to the front and holding on each time. This horse may attempt the same tactics in the Belmont, but after trying to run with Reverberate for 3/4's of a mile, I don’t expect to see it in the hunt after 1 & 1/2 miles.

A STORM IS COMING: INDY STORM GETS READY FOR THE 2005 BELMONT STAKES

The 2005 Belmont Stakes, which will be held on June 11 in the city that never sleeps, New York City, is just around the corner. The race for the Triple Crown may be over but in this last leg of the race, only one thing matters from all horse contenders, and that is redemption.

For Giacomo, he will be out determined to redeem himself after being denied by Afleet Alex of the Triple Crown as the latter stopped Giacomo from taking that second of three steps for the Triple Crown title, a title that can very well be regarded as horse racing's Holy Grail.

There's also Bellamy Road who could start at the Belmont Stakes after going down with a minute injury.

There's so many contenders shaping up for this third and very last of horse wars, but there is one who could might as well weather the storm.

Indy Storm.
